Coffee is one of the world's favourite drinks. But every cup leaves behind spent coffee grounds, and globally, that adds up to more than 10 billion kilograms a year. Most of it goes straight to landfill, where it decomposes without oxygen and releases methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases.
Instead of treating coffee grounds as rubbish, innovators around the world are developing entirely new material systems, turning them into textiles, foams, composites and durable everyday products. Yesterday's waste is becoming tomorrow's raw material.
This is where LUNGO begins: connecting and showcasing brands that dare to turn that waste into something valuable, giving it a second life, and keeping it out of landfill.
