Coffee is one of the world's favourite drinks. But every cup leaves behind spent coffee grounds, and globally, that adds up to more than 10 billion kilograms a year. Most of it goes straight to landfill, where it decomposes without oxygen and releases methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases.

Instead of treating coffee grounds as rubbish, innovators around the world are developing entirely new material systems, turning them into textiles, foams, composites and durable everyday products. Yesterday's waste is becoming tomorrow's raw material.

Methane is up to 28 times more harmful than CO₂ over a 100-year period. The world generates more than 10 billion kilograms of spent coffee grounds every year, and most of it ends up in landfill.

S.Café®

Developed in Taiwan, S.Café incorporates recycled coffee grounds into polyester yarns. The result is a lightweight, high-performance textile with natural odour control, moisture management and quick-drying properties.

Coffee leather alternative

M-Tex

This material combines coffee waste with bio-based binders to create a flexible material designed as an alternative to conventional leather.

Plant-based biocomposite

Flax Seed Composite

Ochis transforms flaxseed residues into durable biocomposite sheets with a distinctive natural appearance, designed as an alternative to petroleum-based plastics.

Coffee-based foam

C-Foam

A lightweight material developed by Bell Living Lab, using spent coffee grounds as part of a bio-based foam system that demonstrates how agricultural waste can replace virgin fossil-based foams in select applications.

Coffee composite polymer

Coffee Ground PU

Spent coffee grounds are blended into polyurethane-based materials, creating durable components with reduced virgin material content.
